The medical journal, Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, released new research explaining a significantly reduced risk of colorectal cancer due to your favorite cup of coffee.

The study showed a whopping 50% risk reduction from people who drank 2.5 cups of coffee every day.

Caffeine plays a significant role in the protective properties of coffee, but it isn’t the only factor in consideration. The scientists believe polyphenols in coffee are responsible for the antioxidant effects in the body.

Chlorogenic acid is a polyphenol with the highest concentration in coffee.

Chlorogenic acid is a potent nutrient with anti-cancer, anti-diabetic and weight loss properties. You can also find this compound in carrots, apples, flax seeds, potatoes, pineapples, and strawberries. More studies also suggest this nutrient may counter liver cancer.

Colorectal cancer, according to WHO and CDC, is the second most common type of cancer after lung cancer.

“I would encourage coffee lovers to revel in the high possibility that their daily mug may lower their risk of colorectal cancer,” as stated by Dr. Stephen Gruber of the University of Southern California.

The brewing method didn’t make a difference in the anti-cancer effects of the coffee, but the added elements of sugar, syrup, sweeteners and flavors may counteract the health benefits.

Drinking coffee in the morning or early afternoon is better than drinking at night because the caffeine may interrupt your body’s circadian rhythm.
