Depression Q&A

What is depression?

Depression (major depressive disorder) is a mood disorder that causes changes in your feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. People who have depression experience persistent sadness and hopelessness, which often disrupts every aspect of their daily lives.

Untreated depression can become severe, leading to suicidal thoughts and self-harm. But with customized treatment at The Center for Integrative and Functional Health and Wellness, you can feel like yourself again and reclaim your health.

What are the symptoms of depression?

Depression differs in every person. It can cause many symptoms, some of the most common being:

  • Persistent sadness
  • Loss of interest in usual activities
  • Appetite changes, causing weight loss or gain
  • Sleep changes (insomnia, sleeping too much)
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Feelings of worthless
  • Frequent irritability, frustration, or anger
  • Frequent thoughts of death, self-harm, and/or suicide

Anxiety often accompanies depression. It can be a symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and many other mood disorders. Many people with physical health problems like back or neck pain also suffer from depression.

How is depression treated?

From the underlying causes to the specific symptoms, depression is unique to each person. Initial treatment usually includes medication management, psychotherapy, nutritional counseling, acupuncture, Reiki healing, and other conservative options.

But around 30% of people with depression suffer from treatment-resistant depression that doesn’t respond to these initial approaches. The Center for Integrative and Functional Health and Wellness offers customized depression treatments, including cutting-edge methods for treatment-resistant depression. These treatments include:

Ketamine infusions

Ketamine infusions deliver an anesthetic directly into your bloodstream. It immediately increases the activity of a brain neurotransmitter, glutamate, which causes an antidepressant effect. Ketamine also helps to restore health in the parts of your brain involved in severe depression.

Oral antidepressants also work by increasing glutamate activity, but antidepressants take a circular route to do so. The medication first increases serotonin activity. That, in turn, increases glutamate activity. Because of this, oral antidepressants take weeks to work, while ketamine can work almost immediately.

Spravato®

Spravato, an FDA-approved nasal spray for treatment-resistant depression, is a different version of ketamine. Like ketamine infusions, Spravato produces very rapid results. You take Spravato along with an oral antidepressant to maximize the results.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

TMS is a treatment that doesn’t use drugs. TMS directs repetitive magnetic pulses directly to the parts of your brain involved in depression. The magnetic pulses improve your brain function, easing depression and other mood disorders like anxiety.
